What AmerenUE Is Doing to Improve Air Quality
Over the past three decades our engineers, environmental scientists and power plant operators have made Ameren an industry leader in reducing emissions from coal-fired power plants while meeting our customers’ ever-increasing demand for electricity at affordable prices.    Since 1990 we have reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by more than 50 percent—well ahead of 1990 Clean Air Act mandates. (See the Ameren Environmental Report for more information.) Among numerous other environmental programs we also are:
	Planning to invest in 100 megawatts of wind power by 2010 as part of our commitment to increase our use of renewable resources.
	Continuing to upgrade our hydroelectric facilities—another renewable source—to produce the power required to serve our growing customer needs.
	Investing in research on promising technologies in carbon capture and sequestration and methane conversion to address greenhouse gas emissions—our nation’s most important environmental challenge.
	Significantly increasing our investment over the next seven years to help our customers reduce their energy consumption.
	Through our voluntary Pure Power program customers can pay a bit more on their bills to support development of alternative energy sources.
